WW100

Their War, Our Story

The Central Stories WW100 Programme

Central Stories Museum & Art Gallery has been developing a series of events to commemorate 100 years since the commencement of World War One.

As Central Otago’s largest museum and holder of much of our regions archival material, we feel it is our duty to host a comprehensive programme during this important period in New Zealand’s commemorative calendar.

We have a variety of exhibitions and activities planned for the five year period. Stay up to date with what is happening by visiting this page on our website, following our facebook page, ringing us at the museum or becoming a member and getting the details directly sent to you.

What’s on & Coming Up Soon

WW100 – The Continuing Story

WW100 Our second exhibition commemorating 100yrs of ANZAC and Central Otago's contribution in the Gallipoli Offensive has now finished. This follows our first exhibition 'A Call to Arms' looking at the start of the war and Central Otago. They have been fantastic exhibitions that our visitors seemed to enjoy. Small portions of the exhibition can be seen, on a rotating basis, in our Heafey Lounge if you missed out.

We are busy planning the next part of our WW100 Programme which will include a small commemoration of the Battle of Chunuk Bair and third exhibition focussing on the ANZACS involvement at the Western Front in Europe. Watch this space for further details related to the Central Stories WW00 Programme.

WW1 Memorial Tour

For $5 you can obtain a War Memorial Tour booklet from Central Stories Museum. It will guide you around the main memorials of Central Otago, offering three different routes, of varying length. Maps, alternative stops and Cafe deals are also included to ensure your tour is enjoyable as well as memorable.

Travel safe, enjoy Central Otago and above all take the time to remember our Fallen.

School Education Pack

During the whole period, educational programmes will be offered to schools. Some of these will involve students coming to the museum while others will take place within their own school.

Other Planned Events

School Holiday Programme & Activity Packs

A number of the upcoming school Holiday programs will likely focus around WWI. We also create a number of holiday activities based on the other events/programmes we have running.

Their War, Our Story:
The Western Front

The third of our commemorative exhibitions: this show will focus on the continuing involvement of the ANZAC’s on the Western Front in Europe and some of the more personal local stories.

And more to come!
